Bangladesh has formally requested an annual import quota from India to secure its food security and stabilize prices amid concerns about supply disruptions from natural disasters and global crises. The requested quota includes rice (15 lakh tonnes), wheat (25 lakh tonnes), sugar (10 lakh tonnes), onions (6 lakh tonnes), garlic (50,000 tonnes), and ginger (1 lakh tonnes). A virtual meeting is scheduled between the two countries to discuss the matter. If approved, the government plans to import a portion of rice and wheat at the government level, with the private sector handling the rest. Bangladesh aims to resolve the issue before Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India for the G-20 Summit. This move is influenced by disruptions in global supply chains due to conflicts and natural disasters affecting essential goods availability and prices.
