Women Workers Outflow Drops 27%

Industry: Migration, SDG

The outflow of Bangladeshi women workers to Saudi Arabia has decreased by over 27% in the first seven months of 2023 due to reduced hiring by the Kingdom. Data from the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET) reveals that 48,543 women workers were employed abroad between January and July, down from 67,127 in the same period in 2022. Saudi Arabia, historically a major destination for Bangladeshi female workers, has cut recruitment due to factors like higher migration costs borne by employers. The country has shifted towards hiring from African nations with lower costs. Middlemen and increased migration costs within the Bangladeshi sector are contributing to the decline. Industry insiders call for a government strategy to ensure quality migration for female workers.
