The government’s upward revision of sugarcane purchase prices has rekindled hopes for increased cultivation, countering the declining trend caused by unprofitable yields. As farmers abandoned sugarcane due to poor profits, production fell from 69 lakh tonnes in 2000-21 to 30.87 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. The Ministry of Industries has initiated a 22% price hike for the fiscal year 2023-24 harvest, with a further 9% rise planned for the following year. The new rates stand at Tk 550 per quintal if delivered to the mill gate, fostering optimism among farmers. The move is expected to revive interest in sugarcane farming, boosting supply for state-owned mills and stimulating the crop’s cultivation across the country.
