As the prominent Bengali Hindu festival, Durga Puja, approaches, Indian traders are urging for higher exports of Hilsa fish from Bangladesh compared to previous years. Around 30 applications have been submitted to Bangladesh’s Commerce Ministry seeking increased Hilsa exports in preparation for the festival in October 2023. In 2022, 67 traders were permitted to export 3,350 tonnes of Hilsa to India for Durga Puja. This year, more businesses are seeking permission to export 100 tonnes each. Hilsa exports to India were resumed in 2019-20 after a hiatus from 2012 to 2018. The recent government ban on Hilsa fishing was lifted, leading to increased availability and improved sales. Despite challenges like delayed payments, Bangladeshi Hilsa is preferred for its superior taste and aroma. Hilsa production in Bangladesh has doubled over the last decade, reaching 5.65 lakh tonnes in FY 2020-21.
