This year, the experimental cultivation of BRRI-98 covered 1050 hectares, significantly expanding its presence under the guidance of the Agriculture Office. This expansion is projected to yield an extra 941 tonnes of paddy, valued at Taka 2.58 crore. As noted by Agriculture Office sources, BRRI-98 matures 40-60 days faster than its predecessors, enabling quadruple crop rotations annually. The upazila agriculture authorities proactively encouraged farmers to embrace BRRI-98 even before the Aush season commenced.
They facilitated seed availability through BADC dealers and offered support through local agricultural assistants. Consequently, farmers reported harvesting promising yields ranging from 18 to 20 maunds per bigha of land surpassing the popular BRRI-48 variety, which yielded 14 to 15 maunds per bigha. Farmers anticipate a price increase of Taka 50 to 100 per maund compared to BRRI-48, contingent on paddy quality. The Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Mohanpur Union Block explained the strategic shift towards BRRI-98 to enhance Aush crop production in place of expanding cultivable land and affirmed the pursuit of increased yield and production. He predicts BRRI-98 will become a pivotal Aush season variety in the upazila’s future.
