Bangladesh’s garment exports to Canada could maintain duty-free privileges post-graduation to developing nation status, following the UK and Australia’s precedent. Canada plans to extend duty-free market access via the General Preferential Tariff (GPT) Plus scheme, replacing the expiring scheme in 2024. Despite Bangladesh’s LDC graduation eliminating benefits, the new Canadian scheme will potentially prolong duty-free privileges until 2034. Garment exports to Canada surged 16.55% YoY to $1.55 billion in 2022-23. With over 95% of Bangladesh’s exports being apparel, the Canadian market presents expansion opportunities. The Canadian scheme’s focus on labor rights and environmental standards aligns with Bangladesh’s progress in these areas.
