The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is facing significant delays in essential transmission infrastructure projects, raising concerns about meeting the July 2024 deadline for the plant’s first unit to commence operations. Even if the power plant itself is ready on time, the lack of necessary transmission lines could render it useless. Challenges include the construction of river crossing lines, substation setup, and frequency adjustment.
The transmission lines require two river crossings over the Jamuna and Padma rivers, with projects estimated to take two years to complete. Additionally, maintaining frequency in the power transmission system from RNPP poses a significant challenge, as it involves a unique type of electricity.
As a result of these challenges, officials are uncertain about whether the necessary transmission infrastructure will be ready by the deadline. A Tk 10,981.74 crore project for power evacuation facilities at RNPP is currently underway, with progress at 65% physically and 48% financially. The situation highlights the need for expedited action to ensure timely project completion.
