NPLs totaled Tk 1,20,656 billion

The country’s banking sector’s non-performing loans (NPLs) reached Tk 1,20,656 crore at the end of last year, primarily as a result of the partial withdrawal of the lax loan repayment options. According to industry insiders and experts, some borrowers are currently having trouble repaying their debts as a result of the prolonged economic turmoil.

When compared to the September quarter of last year, NPLs declined by Tk 13,739.56 crore in the December quarter, making up 8.16% of all granted loans. At the end of December 2022, the overall amount of non-performing loans in the banking industry was Tk 56,460 crore, with bad loans at state-run banks accounting for 20.28 percent and private commercial banks for 5.13 percent. NPLs for foreign banks totaled Tk 3,048 crore while those for specialized banks totaled Tk 4,709 crore. Banks experienced provision shortages of Tk 11,009.29 and Tk 8,828.09, respectively.
