Farmers in the Sylhet division have seen bumper yields in cultivating green malta this year ( 2023), with plans to expand cultivation next year due to favorable market prices. The agriculture department says this growth is due to the region’s ideal climate and soil conditions. Wholesalers emphasize the demand for domestic green malta over foreign orange malta due to overpricing.
Kulaura Upazila Agriculture Officer advises local farmers, provides seedlings, and promotes eco-friendly practices to prevent pests and disease. In Kulaura upazila, green malta cultivation has increased significantly: from 5 hectares in 2018-19 to 23 hectares in 2021-22. The additional director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Sylhet division highlights the superior quality of green malta in the region and ongoing campaigns to encourage more farmers to engage in malta cultivation.
