Gourmati or BARI Mango-12, a mutation of Langra and Ashwina mango by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chapainawabganj is transforming mango industry of Bangladesh.By 2015-16, 50,000 Gourmati mango plants were produced and distributed across the country. It stays in the market until late September, unlike other varieties that run out by early September. Because of this mango imports has been significantly low over the last three to four years.
The prices of Gourmati mangoes range from Tk 6,000 to Tk 16,000 per maund, allowing farmers to profit four to five times more than usual, although it has higher production costs. One farmer expects over 1,000 maunds this year, worth around Tk 80 lakh at current market prices.This year, 30,000 hectares of mangoes were cultivated only in Naogoan with 145 hectares of Gourmati trees.
This naturally-mutated variety, with its exceptional taste and prolonged availability, shows great potential for export. In essence, Gourmati mango is reshaping Bangladesh’s mango industry, with about 5,000 hectares of land now dedicated to its cultivation nationwide.
