The government is planning to establish the country’s first electrical testing laboratory to enhance its power system network. Despite significant growth in the power sector, Bangladesh currently lacks an accredited electrical testing laboratory for third-party testing and certification. An Italian consultant hired by Power Cell has submitted a draft report outlining the feasibility, technical aspects, and financial considerations for the laboratory.
The proposed facility aims to ensure equipment quality and standards, reduce project costs, and minimize reliance on foreign testing laboratories, which currently incur significant foreign currency expenses. The government’s vision is to provide quality electricity to all citizens by 2041, with substantial progress made in the power sector over the past decade. The growth in the sector has prompted private sector companies to establish manufacturing plants in Bangladesh, necessitating a reliable testing facility. The initiative is supported by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA).
