The government is taking urgent measures to address a severe saline crisis in hospitals resulting from a widespread dengue outbreak. They plan to import 20 lakh (2 million) saline bags at a cost of Tk29.19 crore. The demand for saline has surged by 5 to 7 times due to the outbreak, and local suppliers can only meet a fraction of it, leading to inflated prices for patients, with a Tk500 price tag compared to the actual cost of Tk100. The price of a saline bag in India is significantly lower than in Bangladesh, therefore the decision was taken.
Major saline manufacturers, like Libra Infusions Ltd, are struggling due to a lack of working capital, causing production shortfalls. The country’s demand for saline has spiked from 40-50 lakh bags per month to 2.4 crore to 3 crore bags. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is set to discuss and approve the import proposal to mitigate the ongoing healthcare crisis.
