Bangladesh is on track to meet its Aman rice cultivation target, the second-largest rice crop in the country, aiming to bolster domestic self-sufficiency amidst global market uncertainties. Agricultural officials report that as of September 18, farmers have cultivated paddy on 58 lakh hectares, just short of the government’s target of 59.3 lakh hectares. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) set a goal of transplanting paddy on 56.5 lakh hectares, achieving 99.46% of that target.
Director General of the DAE, expressed optimism that the remaining target would be met as farmers in some regions continued transplanting. The successful achievement of this target would surpass last year’s Aman crop acreage.
In the fiscal year 2022-23, Bangladesh harvested close to 4 crore tonnes of rice, with Aman rice accounting for over 38% of total production. The government aims to harvest 1.71 crore tonnes of rice from the Aman crop beginning in November. International factors, such as declining global rice production forecasts and export restrictions in India, further highlight the significance of Bangladesh’s domestic production efforts.
