Cumin prices in Hili, Dinajpur have surged significantly, rising by 80 Taka per kilogram. This increase is attributed to recent changes in import duties. While cumin was priced at 1,100 Taka per kilogram previously, it now stands at 1,200 Taka per kilogram in the current market.
Data from the Hili Customs Office reveals that in August 2023, 603 tons of cumin were imported on 21 trucks, while July saw 2,653 tons imported, and January recorded 1,057 tons brought in on 39 trucks. The increase in import duties, from 120 Taka to 228 Taka per kilogram, has had a notable impact on importers, leading to reduced import quantities and decreased government revenue through this port.
The reduced import of cumin, now averaging only four to five trucks per week compared to the previous daily average, has not only affected government revenue but also impacted the daily income of port authorities. To address unjustifiable price hikes, the National Consumer Rights Protection Department in Dinajpur has launched regular market campaigns.
