Despite government efforts, rising prices of essential commodities continue to burden consumers in Bangladesh. The Commerce Ministry attempted to regulate prices for items like potatoes, local onions, and eggs, but these measures have not yielded significant results. Red lentil and ginger prices increased by Tk 5 and Tk 10 per kg, respectively. Other essentials like rice and oil remain stable but at higher rates. Despite the ministry’s price fixation, potatoes are sold at Tk 48 to Tk 50 per kg, and local onions at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, far above the set prices.
The ministry’s efforts to control egg prices by allowing imports of 10 crore eggs did not lead to a price reduction. Soybean oil prices, fixed at Tk 169 per liter, are yet to be reflected in the markets. Sugar prices, despite being set at Tk 130 per kg, are retailing around Tk 135 to Tk 140 per kg. Broiler chicken prices rose by Tk 10 per kg to Tk 180 to Tk 190 per kg within a week.
