The India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI) has requested the Bangladesh government to permit the import of buffalo meat from India to address the rising demand within the country. IBCCI President has sought approval from the commerce ministry for this import, citing increasing demand due to population growth and dietary shifts.
Bangladesh’s current local fresh meat price stands at Tk 800-850 per kg, while importing frozen halal boneless buffalo meat from India could lower the selling price to Tk 500-550 per kg, as estimated by IBCCI.
Bangladesh had previously imposed a 20% supplementary duty on frozen boneless bovine meat imports from India, affecting the SAFTA benefits for Indian exporters. Despite being self-sufficient in meat production, Bangladesh spent approximately US$2.5 million in FY 2017-18 to import meat from various countries, with India being the largest source. The demand for meat has consistently risen, surpassing annual production figures.
