The Food Ministry has outlined its procurement targets for the Boro season in 2023, aiming to acquire 18 lakh tons of paddy and rice from farmers at specific prices. They will purchase paddy at Tk27 per kg and boiled rice at Tk40 per kg, maintaining the same rates as in 2021. Additionally, Atap rice will be bought at Tk39 per kg. The Boro season spans from April 28 to August 31.
The procurement plan includes 6.50 lakh tons of paddy, 11 lakh tons of boiled rice, and 0.50 lakh tons of Atap rice. Industry experts noted increased production costs due to diesel price manipulation, which was not factored into the government’s pricing decision.
Food Minister mentioned a declining trend in coarse rice prices in local markets, emphasizing changing food habits favoring fine rice. However, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh reported a 4.35% increase in the cost of coarse rice compared to last year, currently priced at Tk50 per kg.
