The Bangladeshi government has granted permission for the import of 6 crore eggs in an effort to stabilize local egg prices. Initially, four companies were authorized to import 4 crore eggs to address rising prices. This recent decision expands the import permissions to six additional companies, each allowed to import 1 crore eggs. The newly approved companies include Cheese Gallery, Popular Trade Syndicate, M/S Ripa Enterprise, S M Corporation, BDS Corporation, and M/s Joynur Traders.
According to the Commerce Ministry, the daily demand for eggs in the country is 4 crore, which has exceeded local production due to the closure of several layer farms amid the pandemic, as reported by the Bangladesh Poultry Industry Central Council. To combat rising prices, the government had set a retail price of Tk12 per egg, but eggs were still being sold at Tk12.50 or higher in Dhaka. As a result, the decision to permit additional egg imports was made, and it is expected that retail prices will soon be reduced to Tk9-10 per egg.
