Hilsa fish prices have surged, making it unaffordable for low-income groups, with prices rising by Tk 150-300 per kg in major city markets due to the start of its exports and an announcement of a fishing ban from October 12, 2023. A 450-600 gram fish now trades at Tk 30,000-32,000 per maund (40 kg) at Mawa wholesale, up from Tk 24,000 a week ago. Medium and large hilsa are trading at Tk 40,000-70,000 per maund.
The prices of other riverine fish have also increased by Tk 100-150 per kg due to Hilsa’s price hike and the fishing ban. The export quantity, though small, can meet a week’s demand for hilsa in the country during this peak month of September.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Secretary expressed concern that hilsa has become too expensive for low-income individuals and recommended government intervention to control prices. Bangladesh annually collects 0.4 million tonnes of hilsa, constituting 9-10% of the country’s total fish production.
