Saif Powertec Limited, a local logistics and container supply chain management provider, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, a statutory body under the Indian government, to facilitate the transportation of goods from mainland India to the remote northeastern states of a neighboring country. The goal is to reduce both time and cost by streamlining cargo transportation through Bangladesh, primarily utilizing the Chattogram port. The MoU aims to promote bilateral trade through multimodal transport, encompassing land, sea, and river routes.
In February of 2024, Saif Powertec plans to deploy two ships to transport cargo from Kolkata to Bangladeshi seaports and then onward to the northeastern part of India. This move is in response to the extensive 1,200-kilometer land route between Kolkata and key cities in the northeast, making the use of Chattogram and Mongla ports a more efficient and cost-effective solution. A 2018 agreement between Bangladesh and India, along with a subsequent Standard Operating Procedure (SoP), outlines the logistics for moving goods between these ports and Indian land ports in Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam. Saif Powertec also intends to establish an office in Kolkata to facilitate seamless cargo transit, benefiting both India’s northeastern region and Bangladesh’s revenue stream.
