The retail price of broiler chicken in Bangladesh has surged due to a shortage of day-old chicks. In August 2023, the price of chicks rose from Tk 15 to Tk 25 per piece, leading to concerns among poultry farmers. The cost has escalated from Tk 35 to Tk 50-60, causing an increase in the cost of production for poultry farmers.
This rise in the chickling prices has resulted in higher retail prices for broiler chicken, with some retailers reporting selling it at Tk 190 per kilogram, up from Tk 170 per kilogram a week ago. Poultry farmers are facing challenges in meeting the demand for the chicks, with some reporting receiving only 30-40% of their demands.
The Breeders Association of Bangladesh notes that the country currently requires 1.5 million day-old chicks weekly, and the gap between supply and demand has contributed to the price increase. The association also highlights that seasonal factors and events like Durga Puja affect the prices.
