Despite a lower cost of 18 Indian Rupees, onions are currently being sold at Tk.80 per kg, leading to concerns about rising prices. The government is struggling to control the prices of essential commodities like onions, garlic, and potatoes. While the country does produce some onions and garlic domestically, it heavily relies on imports. However, even with substantial monthly imports of onions from India, the local market prices remain unaffected.
In the Jashore region, onions are being sold for 80 to 90 Taka per kg. Traders suspect that importers and hoarders are manipulating prices through syndicates. They believe government intervention may be necessary to stabilize onion prices.
Customs data reveals that 278 metric tons of onions were imported from India through the Benapole port this month, with prices ranging from $14 to $22 per metric ton. Imported onions in Bangladesh currently cost between 18 and 24 Taka per kg. The sudden surge in local onion prices has surprised customs officials, as Benapole port typically handles less perishable imports.
