In Dhaka, the prices of essential commodities, including edible oil, onions, and ginger, have witnessed a surge, posing challenges for consumers. Despite the commerce ministry’s set prices for key items on September 2023, effective implementation has been inconsistent. Notably, packaged soya bean oil is now being sold at Tk 175 per liter, a Tk 5 increase from the government’s designated Tk 169. Similarly, palm oil, initially priced at Tk 124 by the ministry, is now selling for Tk 125-130 per liter.
Onion prices have escalated by Tk 10-15 per kilogram, reaching Tk 80-90 for local varieties and Tk 65-70 for imported ones. The price of various other commodities, such as potatoes, eggs, sugar, ginger, and vegetables, has also experienced an upward trend.
These rising costs highlight challenges in controlling inflation and enforcing government-regulated prices, adversely affecting consumers who already face economic constraints. The situation calls for effective measures to ensure fair pricing and stable markets for essential commodities, safeguarding the economic well-being of the population.
