Approximately 20 traders have sought government permission to import millions of eggs, ranging from 10 million to 200 million per trader, in an effort to stabilize market prices. The Ministry of Commerce is currently reviewing these requests to address potential supply shortages.
Local poultry farmers express concern about the negative impact on the domestic industry, considering it a risky move. They advocate for addressing firm-level issues, such as reducing raw material costs for feed, rather than relying on imports. The government had previously permitted ten companies to import up to 100 million eggs to control market prices after volatility led to eggs reaching Tk 15 each.
