In September 2023, the Chattogram port in Bangladesh saw an increase in import container handling, with 1,430 more TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) compared to August. However, export container handling declined by 7,692 TEUs during the same period. The port handled approximately 106,505 TEUs of import cargo containers and 57,769 TEUs of export cargo containers in September, compared to 105,075 TEUs for import and 65,461 TEUs for export in August.
The slowdown in imports and exports is attributed to the economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, with global factors affecting container volumes at the port. Import container handling in September increased by 5,012 TEUs compared to the same month in 2022, while exports decreased by 6,034 TEUs. The drop in demand for ready-made garments due to the global economic crisis is one of the contributing factors. Despite these challenges, the relaxation of LC (Letter of Credit) restrictions due to an easing dollar crisis has offered some relief.
