South Korean investors are facing business challenges in Bangladesh due to high customs duties on imports of raw materials and intermediate goods. These challenges affect companies involved in manufacturing consumer electronics and car assembly. Issues such as mobile phone smuggling and the presence of second-hand cars in the market are further complicating their operations.
The government of Bangladesh is encouraged to focus on consolidating and enhancing the manufacturing sector’s productivity as the country transitions from its Least Developed Country (LDC) status. There is also potential for cooperation between Korean and Bangladeshi garment companies to diversify export items. Currently, 454 Korean industrial units are registered with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida), contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.
