International Monetary Fund (IMF) is raising questions about the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) ability to recover approximately Tk10,000 crore in arrears from Petrobangla, the state-owned oil company. The IMF delegation recently held a meeting with NBR officials, discussing how these outstanding dues, not collected for over three years, will be retrieved.
The IMF also sought clarifications on tax expenditures within the tax and customs divisions. Specific details on revenue collection targets for the current fiscal year and the rationale for increasing the tax-free income limit for individual taxpayers were requested. Additionally, the IMF inquired about the money waived through duty exemptions, such as VAT exemptions on various products. The NBR provided explanations on these matters during the meeting.
