The Bangladesh government will enforce a 22-day ban on hilsa fishing, effective from October 12,2023, extending until November 2,2023. During this period, ilish catching, selling, hoarding, and transportation will be prohibited to safeguard the fish’s critical spawning season. This decision was announced by Fisheries and Livestock Minister at a meeting of the National Task Force Committee on Hilsa Resource Development. The aim of this fishing ban is to protect mother ilish fish as they lay their eggs. Ilish is the most significant contributor to Bangladesh’s fish production, and it is highly valued in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. Approximately 75% of the world’s ilish catch comes from Bangladesh, with Chandpur being a prominent trading center for ilish due to its distinct taste, particularly from the Padma River.
