Direct Shipping Decline From Seven to Three

Industry: Logistics & Shipping, Shipping

Direct shipping from Chattogram port to major international destinations, including Europe, is on the decline as shipping lines cease operations due to reduced freight charges, export bookings, and import orders. Originally, there were seven international routes launched in 2022, reducing transportation time and expenses for exporters.

However, within a year, four routes have been canceled, and the remaining three are at risk. Shipping companies have witnessed an 80% reduction in freight charges on European routes and a 60% decline in export product bookings. Reduced volumes of imports from China have also contributed to the downturn. The suspension of direct shipping is challenging the country’s garment industry, which benefited from quicker delivery times and increased acceptance of Bangladeshi products among foreign buyers. Shipping lines cite a global reduction in export-import demand as the main reason behind the decline. Efforts to restart these routes may depend on improving international market conditions.
