In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023, Bangladesh witnessed a substantial fourfold increase in wheat imports due to businesses taking advantage of reduced global wheat prices. Banks’ support in opening Letters of Credit (LCs) for imports played a significant role in this upsurge.
During July-September 2023, a total of 1.328 million tonnes of wheat was imported, marking a 259% increase compared to the 369,000 tonnes from the same period the previous year, with private importers contributing the most.
The prior fiscal year (2022-2023) saw a significant decline in wheat imports to an eight-year low due to high prices and banks’ sluggish LC issuance amid a US dollar crisis. As international prices stabilized and supply increased, the cost of wheat began to drop. The US Department of Agriculture also revised its projection for Bangladesh’s wheat imports in fiscal year 2023-24, indicating further increases.
