Eggs imported from India are expected to enter the market at significantly lower prices in the next week, following the Bangladesh government’s announcement of egg imports to stabilize market prices. Three companies are set to import eggs from the Indian state of Haryana, with each egg costing Rs 5.5 and a 33% duty levied on this price.
The first phase will see each of the three companies importing 240,000 eggs. Anticipating a consumer price of around Tk 11 per egg, the companies aim to streamline distribution by eliminating intermediaries and partnering with Happy Haat for storage. The move comes in response to soaring egg and broiler chicken prices in the past two months, causing financial strain, leading the commerce ministry to fix the maximum price of eggs at Tk 12 apiece on September 14. So far, 15 companies have been approved to import a total of 150 million eggs.
