The price of hilsa, a popular fish in Bangladesh, has reached a 10-year high, making it unaffordable for many low and middle-class consumers. The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) reports that the price of hilsa weighing 1 to 2 kg has increased by 15 to 25 percent compared to 2022. In Dhaka, the average price for hilsa weighing 500 grams to 1 kg was Tk 1,200 last month, increasing by Tk 400 per kg compared to the previous year.
The high price is attributed to factors such as less rainfall during the hilsa season, reduced hilsa catch, and alleged syndication by traders, although government officials and some researchers dispute the claim of reduced hilsa production. According to the government, last year the production of hilsa in the country was 5 lakh 66 thousand 593 metric tons. A 22-day ban on hilsa catching, transportation, storage, and sale is currently in effect.
