Fish prices in Dhaka have surged by Tk 20-40 per kilogram, alongside increases in vegetable, onion, egg, and potato prices, impacting low-income consumers. The spike in fish prices coincided with the hilsa fishing ban in sanctuaries, effective until November 03.
Varieties like pangas, koi, tilapia, ruhi, katla, and pabda experienced price hikes of Tk 20-40 per kilogram within a week. Other items such as shrimp, shoul, local pabda, and aair also witnessed varying price increases. Incessant rains in early October further raised the prices of summer vegetables, eggs, potatoes, and onions.
Notably, egg prices rose due to increased day-old chick prices and reduced production from heavy rain. Potato prices increased by Tk 5 per kilogram, while onion prices showed a Tk 10-20 per kilogram increase in a week, according to the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.
