The chairman of Robi Axiata has discussed the potential transformation of Bangladesh’s telecom sector by adopting a universal licensing regime. He emphasized the need for liberalizing licensing to facilitate the transition from being a telecom operator to a technology company (techco). This shift aims to enable telecom firms to compete effectively in emerging fields such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and digital transformation.
He also suggested that allowing mobile operators to build their own fiber-optic networks could attract foreign investment and increase competition. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of infrastructure sharing and raising Bangladesh’s competitiveness to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI).
He commended the success of the Robi-Airtel merger and the company’s financial performance. He believes that Bangladesh’s digitalization efforts, such as the Smart Bangladesh vision, will contribute to the country’s progress.
