The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has defended its revision of Bangladesh’s GDP growth forecast for the fiscal year 2023-24, reducing it from 6.5 percent to 6 percent in its latest “World Economic Outlook.” The IMF stated that the adjustment was “pretty reasonable” given the country’s current challenges, including high inflation and global economic conditions.
It cited rising commodity prices, a slowdown in external demand, and global monetary tightening as factors affecting Bangladesh’s growth. The government’s target of 7.5 percent growth was noted but considered higher than the IMF’s forecast. However, the IMF praised Bangladesh’s efforts to address macroeconomic challenges and enhance revenue generation, emphasizing its strong growth potential in the future. A recent IMF loan to Bangladesh included conditions related to revenue collection targets, which are currently under review
