The price of cardamom in Nitai Ganj, Narsingdi, has surged by 400-500 Taka per kg over two months. Traders highlight that a substantial portion of the national cardamom demand isn’t reliant on imports. The Ukraine-Russia war has led to a global price increase for various products.
Depleting reserves and concerns about Letter of Credit (LC) opening due to the dollar exchange rate hike contribute to reduced imports, causing the cardamom price surge. Grade one cardamom is now priced at 2,300 Taka per kg, up from 1,900 Taka in July. Second-grade saw an increase from 900 Taka to 1,400 Taka in six months. Third-grade cardamom rose from 1,100 Taka to 1,600 Taka in a month.
The abnormal price increase is attributed to international market dynamics, insufficient imports, and local demand. If the dollar crisis eases, spice import costs may decrease, returning prices to normal, suggests Abir Hossain, a spice trader.
