Rice production has increased for the sixth consecutive year in fiscal year (FY) 2022-23, reaching a record high. During the Boro season in FY23, the country harvested 2.07 crore tonnes of rice, marking a 3 percent rise from the previous fiscal year.
The overall rice production grew by 2.5 percent year-on-year to 3.91 crore tonnes in FY23. Seven years ago, the total production of rice was 3.38 crore tonnes. This growth is attributed to the adoption of high-yielding varieties (HYV) and hybrid rice. The significant increase in rice production has reduced the need for imports, with no rice imports reported in the initial months of (FY) 2022-23.
BRRI said it is working to boost yields to meet the increasing demand for rice as Bangladesh’s population has reached nearly 17 crore. The expansion of HYV and hybrid rice cultivation, which now covers 81 percent of the total rice acreage, while hybrid rice cultivation expanded to 10 percent in FY23, up from 6 percent in FY10 has driven this surge in production.
