Bangladesh’s Commerce Minister stated that the government has not made a decision regarding potato imports, emphasizing the current ample potato stock in the country. However, market monitoring continues, and the government may consider allowing potato imports after consulting with the agriculture minister.
Importing eggs will soon commence. The delay is attributed to requirements for testing and certification by exporting countries to ensure the eggs are free from bird flu, influenza, or harmful bacteria. Bangladeshi businesses need extra time to obtain the necessary certifications as they have not imported eggs, which are a rich source of high-quality protein. The government recently authorized 15 enterprises to import 15 crore eggs, and seven of them have initiated the process by opening letters of credit. Despite global factors contributing to rising prices of essential commodities, the government aims to provide affordable prices to consumers.
