Fresh vegetable and fruit exporters in Bangladesh are encountering challenges in shipping due to new rules enforced by the Customs House in Dhaka. Since August 1, 2023, the customs house has been conducting real-time assessments and examinations of exported goods and related documents. However, most flights carrying cargo, especially perishables, depart at night, making it difficult for exporters to instantly provide all necessary documents.
Perishable items have a short shelf life, and any loss or damage during transport may require the amendment of export documents in the Online Exp Monitoring System (OEMS) maintained by the Bangladesh Bank. However, many exporters don’t have the required access to the OEMS. As a result, the Bangladesh Fruits Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters’ Association (BFVAPEA) has urged authorities to relax the rules to expedite fresh vegetable and fruit exports. This issue is particularly relevant as export earnings from fresh vegetables grew by 269% to $48 million in the July-September period of the current fiscal year.
