During an event organized by the Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, experts expressed concerns about the challenges faced by small and marginal farmers in Bangladesh. The event, titled “Citizen’s Agenda for Inclusive Development and Fairness,” addressed crucial issues, including agriculture, employment, unplanned urbanization, public services, and clean and affordable energy. A research fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies highlighted the need for agricultural transformation to create an inclusive and diversified economy.
Challenges in this transformation include labor shortages, land fragmentation, climate change, and a lack of skilled labor. An assistant professor at Independent University, Bangladesh, discussed the adverse impact of unplanned urbanization on the quality of life in cities. He emphasized the need for improved governance, coordination, and information policies to address challenges in urban development. The experts also discussed the importance of addressing inequities and the middle-income trap in Bangladesh’s economic development.
