Stakeholders in Bangladesh’s energy sector have highlighted the importance of diversifying the state-run Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) to facilitate the energy transition and generate revenue. They recommended that BPDB create separate units for renewable energy and other sectors to attract private investment. While Bangladesh has an excess electricity generation capacity of around 16,000 megawatts against a total capacity of approximately 25,000 megawatts, further additions to renewable energy capacity could lead to higher government capacity payment obligations to power plants. As Bangladesh aims to generate 40% of its power from renewable sources by 2030, the transition will also create employment opportunities, requiring investment in human resources development to meet these goals.
