The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Pabna, Bangladesh, was officially recognized as a nuclear facility on October 5. The government anticipates that RNPP will contribute at least 2% to the national economy. Power generation from RNPP is expected to begin on an experimental basis in September next year, with full electricity supply to the public by early 2025.
However, the state-run Power Grid Company of Bangladesh faces challenges in installing the transmission line, delaying completion until June 2025 due to three critical river crossings.RNPP comprises two units with 1,200 MW capacity each, with significant progress in the first unit’s completion (90%) and the second unit (70%).
The first unit aims to be ready for fuel installation by April, and power generation trials will begin in September 2024. The project is part of Bangladesh’s effort to increase its clean energy capacity, with plans for two more nuclear power plants at Rooppur in the future. It is seen as a cost-effective way to provide electricity to the northern regions, reducing the reliance on expensive imported fuels.
