The government plans to allocate Tk 90 crore as an incentive to promote the cultivation and production of hybrid rice varieties during this year’s Boro season. This incentive will benefit approximately 14.40 lakh small and marginal farmers who will receive two kilograms of hybrid seeds for free, enough for cultivating one bigha of land. The Ministry of Agriculture anticipates that this incentive will expand hybrid rice production by 1.92 lakh hectares, resulting in an additional 9.5 lakh tonnes of rice production with an expected yield of 4.95 tonnes per hectare. In the previous fiscal year (2022-23), 15 lakh farmers received free hybrid seeds, which led to an expansion of hybrid paddy cultivation on 2 lakh hectares and an increase in rice production by 9.83 lakh tonnes. The government order regarding this incentive was issued recently, and distribution will commence at the field level.
