Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has granted a groundbreaking $50 million loan to BSRM Steels Limited, marking its first investment in Bangladesh’s private sector manufacturing. The loan, signed on October 4, supports the construction of an eco-friendly steel plant with a total project cost of $108 million.
JICA, Bangladesh’s major development partner, contributes nearly half of the required funding, signalling a strategic move to revive the country’s private sector. The loan spans 12 years with a 9% interest rate, and co-financing involves institutions like Standard Chartered Bank and the Export-Import Bank of India. The Mirsharai-based steel plant aims to increase BSRM Steels’ annual capacity by 600,000 tonnes to 1.4 million tonnes, operational by mid-2024.
The initiative aligns with JICA’s focus on green manufacturing and sustainability in response to Bangladesh’s growing demand for steel. The loan will facilitate environmental initiatives within the steel industry, including solar power generation and emission reduction measures.
