During the fourth meeting of the Minimum Wage Board in Bangladesh, representatives from the country’s readymade garment manufacturing industry and worker unions submitted their proposals for a new minimum wage. The two sides proposed significantly different figures, with a gap of nearly Tk 10,000. The workers’ representative, suggested a minimum monthly wage of Tk 20,393, with over 61% as basic pay.
In contrast, the factory owners’ representative, proposed a minimum monthly wage of Tk 10,400, with 51.25% as basic pay. Currently, the minimum monthly wage for garment workers at grade seven is Tk 8,000, set in 2018. Labor rights groups rejected both proposals, demanding a minimum monthly wage ranging from Tk 23,000 to Tk 25,000. The Bangladesh Garment Workers’ Solidarity threatened massive labour protests to realise their demand of Tk 25,000 after the Durga Puja festival on October 26.The new wage structure is expected to come into effect in December this year. The board plans to hold its next meeting on November 1,2023.
