The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh has decided not to hold the annual income tax fair for the fourth consecutive year in 2023, continuing the trend since 2020. Instead, they will provide one-stop or special services to taxpayers throughout November in all tax zones. This move is aimed at strengthening tax services while avoiding large gatherings due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The tax fair, initiated in 2010, sought to encourage tax compliance and improve the country’s tax-to-GDP ratio. Despite the increase in new e-TIN (Electronic Tax Identification Number) holders, the number of individuals submitting income tax returns hasn’t risen proportionally. Last year, out of 90 lakh e-TIN holders, only around 36 lakh submitted income tax returns.
