Bangladesh’s Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) suggests an increase in the minimum wage for entry-level garment workers from Tk 8,000 to Tk 17,568 per month due to rising inflation. CPD argues that global fashion buyers could support this raise by adding just 7 cents to each product’s manufacturing cost. The organization urges the Bangladesh Minimum Wages Board to consider a 55% wage increase.
CPD proposes that the wage structure be percentage-based instead of a fixed salary, and calls on global brands to support this adjustment. Data from the CPD study shows an increase in mean unit cost for top exporting products in surveyed factories from $3.0 in 2017 to $4.1 in 2023, alongside an increase in the unit price of top products from $3.87 to $4.64 during the same period. Meanwhile, labor leaders advocate for a Tk 25,000 minimum wage to address inflation, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a fair living wage for workers in the industry. The new minimum wage is expected to be finalized by November 2023.
