As Cyclone Hamoon approaches the coastal districts of Bangladesh, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has issued a critical advisory to farmers. They are urged to harvest transplanted Aman paddy once it reaches 80 percent maturity to prevent severe crop damage due to the impending cyclone. Aman is a significant rice crop, constituting over 38 percent of the country’s total rice production. Approximately 58 lakh hectares were planted with Aman paddy until September,2023.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reports that the depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm. It is predicted to move north-northeastwards and strengthen over the next three days. The cyclone is expected to cross near Cox’s Bazar coast with heavy wind speeds reaching around 110kph.
