During the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2023-204, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh saw a 14.34% growth in tax revenue collection, primarily driven by value-added tax (VAT) receipts. The NBR gathered Tk 767.51 billion in taxes by September 2023, compared to Tk 671.27 billion during the same period in the previous year. However, the revenue authority fell short of its target by Tk 81.95 billion in the July-September period. A senior tax official cited ambitious revenue collection targets as a recurring cause for shortfalls. VAT collection saw an 18.07% increase in Q1, followed by the customs wing, while income tax and travel tax grew by 17.47%.
