The price of coarse rice in Bangladesh has surged, impacting low-income individuals. Coarse rice prices rose to Tk54-56 per kilogram, with medium varieties reaching Tk62-65 per kg—a Tk2.0-4.0 increase in a week.
Additionally, government-fixed prices for onions and potatoes were surpassed in the market, with locally selected onions priced at Tk115 per kg (Tk10 higher than the previous week) and potatoes at Tk60 per kg (Tk10 more than the government-fixed price). Broiler chicken prices also increased by Tk10 per kg, reaching Tk200-215. The surge in essential commodity prices comes amid record-high prices for vegetables and fish due to supply disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Secretary expressed concern over the government’s failure to stabilize essential commodity prices, adversely affecting low-income households.
